WolfBad Squad 21. ožujka dovodi The Underground Youth u Močvaru da još jednom rastope zidove tog kluba svojim teškim, atmosferičnim zvukom. Na koncertu će nam predstaviti posljednji, sedmi album “What Kind Of Dystopian Hellhole Is This?”.

Nikada me nisu pitali da opišem svoj život u dvije riječi.

Želim vidjeti pravi performans, energiju, pokidane žice i tuče. Što god. Trebalo bi biti uzbudljivo.

Kako bi ocijenio svoje koncerte u Hrvatskoj dosad?

Odlično smo se proveli oba puta! Dobar prostor i ljudi, odlična ekipa…

Sve to oko Brexita i političke besmislice…

Izvorni tekst intervjua

The crowd from Mochvara knows you well and journalists from Ziher.hr wrote a lot about your concerts there, but this interview is probably the first one, or one of the first ones, people in Croatia will have a chance to read. With that in mind, we’ll go back to bases. Can you tell us how and where it all started?

2008, the North West of England, I started recording these simple lo-fi tracks in my bedroom with some really cheap, basic recording equipment. Really, I had no idea what I was doing.

You started writing poetry when you were 16 or 17. What happened to the poems that were written at that early age?

Some were turned into The Underground Youth’s earliest songs, featuring on “Morally Barren”, “Voltage” and even “Mademoisell”. Others still exist in the pages of my notebooks, lost or forgotten somewhere I guess.

What did the expression “underground youth” stood for when you first came up with the eponymous poem and what does it represent now?

The idea centred around a dystopian future in which the youth population, particularly those taking part in an “underground” movement, were fighting for the cause of revolution. The underground youth versus the ruling class. Or something like that… It’s probably more relevant today than it was when I thought it up.

If you had to narrow the description of your life down to two words, would these two make the cut?

Describing my life in two words is something I’ve never been asked to do before. I’m afraid it’s something far too hard to even consider.

It gets around that you’re a big filmophile. (I think I actually discovered your music during a period of my life ruled by a strong Anna Karina obsession.) I believe you fell in love with the cinema long before you started creating music, am I right?

When I was younger my creative love was cinema. I studied film (particularly the French New Wave and New German Cinema) and aspired to work in the field. At some stage music took over from that, but I’ve always found the connection between the two art forms close. My music is hugely inspired by cinema and I think in return it gives The Underground Youth’s songs a cinematic feel.

Do you remember how it started? What was the first movie you wanted to watch over and over?

Going way back it was probably “Taxi Driver” that really kick started my love of film. It acted as a gateway, I didn’t watch anything the same after that.

What was the first concert that gave you a similar feeling?

That’s harder, I didn’t attend many concerts when I was younger. I guess the Brian Jonestown Massacre was one of the first shows I walked away from thinking “I’d love to start a band”.

I think concerts have a dramaturgy of their own, similar to that of a movie. What are the parameters of a good concert according to you?

I agree. It should be a show. You know, I don’t go to a concert to watch music being played exactly as it is on the record. I could stay home and listen to the record. For me I want to see a real performance, energy, broken strings and fights. Whatever. It should be exciting.

How would you rate your concerts in Croatia so far?

We’ve had a great time previously! Nice venue and people, great crowd.. There’s nothing worse than playing a show and feeling no energy and passion coming back from the audience. Well, that’s never been a problem in Croatia.

Now, I have to ask what inspired you to move to Berlin and did it have anything to do with Der Himmel über Berlin?

A combination of reasons really.. As I mentioned I love the cinematic history of the city and also the music. We just wanted a change and Berlin is perfect for us right now.

Do you plan to keep on moving? What are the pros and cons to that way of life for you?

I would never plan that far ahead. We’re going on tour and then we’ll make a new record.. That’s about as far as I’ll plan.

How is your relationship with England from afar?

I don’t miss it. All this Brexit and political nonsense. It gives you a different perception, watching from afar. We’ll be touring the UK in May actually, it will be nice to see family and friends and enjoy certain elements of British cuisine you can’t find elsewhere. But that’s all I miss really.

And what is the relationship with the women form the Underground Youth’s album covers? Is there an interesting story there somewhere?

The artist behind a number of them is Lorena Sequeyro, she’s a Mexican photographer who features on a few covers. Others are friends, acquaintances and Anna Karina, obviously.

How relevant are the album covers today in general? What is your all-time favourite album cover, by any band?

For me it’s very important, it’s all part of the package, a complete work of art. An all-time favourite? It’s hard to pick just one but I’ll go with Robert Mapplethorpe’s cover for Patti Smith’s “Horses”.

Finally, did you get to see more of Croatia during your visits here? What are your impressions?

Unfortunately, both of our previous visits have been short and fleeting. Hopefully this time it will have longer to make an impression on us!

What kind of people would you like to have in front you at the day of the concert?

Anyone and everyone who may or may not be interested in what we do.. The more the merrier!
